Can Cats Eat Peanuts

Peanuts account for about two-thirds of total nut consumption, according to Peanut Institute. That’s a different thing that peanuts aren’t actually nuts but legumes. While most nuts like pistachio, almonds, etc grow on trees, peanuts harvest just above ground level. Peanuts are respected among the masses and on 13th September, the United States celebrates National Peanut Day to honor the excellent seed.

Apart from eating it as a snack, we use peanut butter after the gym for its high nutritional content. Many people also feed their dog’s peanut butter as a healthy snack. It’s a part of their dog’s daily diet. All this makes cat owners curious whether their cat can also eat peanuts directly or its butter.

Many people just assume that since it’s good for canines, it will be good for all felines too. But it’s just a myth and it’s wise of you to come here and check it up. It might be that your cat stole a peanut from the table, swallowed it or you are just being curious. Whatever be the reason, you’ll find your answer here.

Can Cats have Peanuts?

Peanuts aren’t among the first things people ask about feeding their cats. Nor have cats regularly shown a liking to them. Perhaps peanuts aren’t a part of any part of cat food or treat. So it’s good to see its potential impact before feeding.

The basic answer to the question is yes, your cat can eat peanuts. It’s non-toxic, non-poisonous and doesn’t possess any harms. The shape of peanuts isn’t such that it can cause any obstruction even if left undigested. But is peanut beneficial to your cat? Probably not. It doesn’t hydrate your cat and your cat doesn’t need it at any time.

But it contains proteins and you might think it would satisfy her protein needs. Cats mostly rely on proteins for energy and peanuts contain the highest amount of protein among all the nuts. But cats are only receptive to a protein that comes from meats. Protein from peanuts may not benefit them as much.

Peanuts also contain other things that your cat may not be able to digest. But of course, a small number of peanuts won’t do any harm. If your cat has eaten up a small amount or you want to feed them, you can do it safely using the following method.

How can I safely give peanuts to my cat?

While peanuts are safe to eat for cats, you should beware of mixing anything with it. It shouldn’t have any salt, sugar, barbeque powder, tastemakers, and chocolate. Especially keep in mind never to feed chocolate to your cat. Not even white chocolate or in a small amount.

You should also remove the covering or husks of the peanuts. They can be hard to digest and may even choke her neck, digestive tract or rectum. It can scratch around her body and cause severe damage. Always remove them before feeding your little feline.

You can give it your cat to play but always under your observation as she may nibble or bite on it. After applying these precautionary measures, you can give your cats peanuts however you want. You can give them the peanut whole directly but I’m not sure your cat would like it.

You can try making a paste or crushing it into minute pieces using mortar. Apart from that, you can also dice them or chop them clean with a knife. Experiment with these ways to know which one your cat likes the most and which one she hates.

But adopting these precautions doesn’t mean you would feed her too much of it. Here we discuss why you shouldn’t overfeed it.

Precautions to take while introducing new food to cat

  • When introducing a new food product, always feed your cat in small amounts to check for allergies.
  • Break down cat food into small pieces to make it easily digestible. It would also prevent choking and blockage
  • Always feed your cat raw food. Seasoned, salted or sweetened products can be harmful to cats
  • Remove the shell before feeding peanuts. They can be hard to break and digest. The  shell may also get trapped in the throat and result in pain
  • Don’t feed them vegetarian snacks on a regular basis. Concentrate on feeding your cat with meat products which are the most beneficial

Avoid overfeeding peanuts

Peanuts have a significantly high amount of fat. Although it’s monounsaturated fat which is good for health, your cat may not be able to digest it. A feline’s body can’t digest high quantities of fats. Moreover, their digestive system doesn’t like plant matter. Their bodies are suited to eat meat and you should only feed them plant products occasionally.

You shouldn’t feed your cat too much of a snack or anything other than her main food. Domestic cats stay sedentary and may get obese quickly. Only feed her with healthy cat food and a little snack here and there. A good measure of this is if you feed 90% high-quality food to your cat, you may feed 10% low-quality snacks too.

Are cats allergic to peanuts?

You can surely feed your cat peanuts in moderation. But like all food products, it also comes with a risk of allergies. Moreover, many children are allergic to peanuts which makes the question very valid. Cats are known to have food allergies.

Your cat might be born with some allergies while she would have developed some allergies over time. To ensure she isn’t allergic, you need to take proper measures when introducing a new food product to your cat. Allergic symptoms may be mild at first but grow stronger with time.

You should only feed a very small amount for the first time. It is also essential to act quickly at the early signs to not let problems aggravate. Common symptoms related to peanut allergies include:

  • Itching
  • Skin irritation
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Acute ear infection
  • Weight Loss
  • Hair loss

These symptoms don’t necessarily mean your cat is allergic and may just mean her stomach is upset. You should consider the first aid measures. Then again try feeding her with peanuts after she recovers. If symptoms continue, consult the vet immediately to confirm if she’s allergic.

How are peanuts good for cats?

Peanuts have a high content of protein and healthy fats. But that’s about the goodness of peanuts for cats. Only the protein content would benefit her to some extent. That fat content makes it rather a poor option for a long term snack of your cat.

Feed it only if you want to. There’s no reason why you have to add it to her daily diet. You should feed her in moderation while taking necessary precautions, if at all.

Can you use a peanut shell as a toy?

Cats like to play with small objects of different shapes. Peanut shells or husks can attract your cat and she may want to play with it. But it’s not advisable to give your little furball a peanut shell as a toy. Because cats have sharp paws and as she scratches and plays with it, the shell may break.

Cats usually nibble on their toys and when she starts nibbling the brittle shell, it can break and she may potentially swallow small pieces. As we have discussed earlier, it can be hard to digest and may even cause a blockage. But if you really want a cheap, rattle-like toy for your cat, you would have to give it under your observation.

Then again, it’s not practically possible to do that. If she is habitual, she may find her favorite toy and ingest it in the middle of the night. You don’t want your vat choking at that point in time because of a worthless toy.

When can cats eat peanut butter?

Peanut butter is a very healthy combination of fat, protein, carbohydrate, and salt. It helps restore energy after workouts and is a great snack in the middle of the day. While dogs get excited by its fragrance, cats don’t really have any interest in it. But if your cat does like to lick on peanut butter, you should not worry about it.

It’s not toxic as per APSCA’s list of toxic products for cats. But there is bad news too. Peanut butter doesn’t have any nutritional benefit to your cat, much like peanuts. Their nutritional needs are only met by animal proteins coming from meat and eggs. Mice and birds are the best sources of protein for cats.

You shouldn’t feed peanut butter to your cat unless for medicinal purposes. It contains a lot of fat and can result in obesity. Feeding your cat too many carbohydrates may also lead to diabetes. Regularly eating peanut butter can have many adverse effects on cats.

Ingesting too much peanut butter in one go can result in vomiting or diarrhea. Since peanut butter is quite consistent, it can stick to your cat’s throat and cause her temporary choking. It’s anyway a struggle for cats to eat such a sticky paste.

The bottom line here is that while peanut and peanut butter aren’t toxic to your cat, there’s no reason why they need it. It doesn’t benefit the cat much and can rather harm it in different ways. Since play with the husks is also dangerous for your feline, she’s better off staying away from peanuts and its products.
